Looking for a new hobby? Why not pick up Gardening...

Gardening is a fun activity that many people find to be relaxing and rewarding at the same time. However, it does require a lot of work. There are some people who just naturally have a green thumb and seem to be able to make anything grow without any effort but most people do need to exert considerable effort in order to turn their gardening ventures into a successful hobby.

This doesn’t mean that gardening has to be difficult though. In the beginning, it does require planning and preparation, and maybe some amount of research as well so that you can find out which types of plants grow best in the kind of climate you have, and so on. But once you get the hang of it, everything else will be quite easy.

If you are thinking of going into gardening as a hobby, the first thing that you would have to do is decide which types of plants you want to grow. Do you want to start a flower garden to make your yard beautiful all year round? Or do you want to plant vegetables that you can eventually harvest and use as ingredients for cooking?

A lot of people these days are interested in organic gardening because of the much-publicized benefits of eating organic vegetables as compared to commercially grown produce. If this is your primary reason for starting a garden, some of the recommended crops that you can start with are tomatoes, chili, citrus fruits, and herbs like basil, sage or oregano. These crops are ideal because they are relatively easy to grow and are frequently used in many popular recipes. If you are a beginner and keen on organic gardening, you can consider picking up aquaponics as it is relatively easy to set up and manage compared to traditional soil-based organic gardening. Once you have decided on what types of plants you want to grow, you should then choose a location for your garden. Select a spot that gets adequate sunlight and that is quite convenient for you to tend. If you don’t have a large backyard, or any backyard for that matter, this should not dissuade you from starting your gardening hobby. A lot of urban gardeners are able to successfully grow and harvest crops just by using various containers as pots, which they just place on their balcony or by a large window.

It would also be necessary to purchase a few basic tools for your garden, like a shovel or a trowel, a watering can, and some garden stakes. If you are thinking of having a larger garden, you might also find it useful to invest in a rake, a hoe and a hose or sprinkler. You don’t really need to spend a huge amount of money for gardening since these tools are all very affordable.

One of the most important things that you need to remember as a new gardener is that it does take time before you can see the fruits of your labor. Many people quit too soon, thinking that nothing is coming out of their efforts. But if you are patient and determined, you will soon be able to see the results of all your hard work.
